Discover the Legacy of Japan’s First Anesthetic Surgeon
Nestled at the edge of the scenic Kino River City in Wakayama Prefecture, Seishu no Sato is a cultural and agricultural gateway where history, nature, and community converge. Located just north of the National Route 24 intersection in Nami-te Market, the roadside station stands in close proximity to the historic Shunrinken—former home and clinic of Dr. Gōkaku Seishū, the pioneering physician who performed the world’s first successful surgery using general anesthesia.
More than a rest stop, Seishu no Sato offers visitors a journey through time and taste. Explore exhibits of original medical artifacts, stroll through aromatic herb gardens, and enjoy seasonal produce and local crafts at the on-site shop. The annual Seishū Festival reenacts the bride’s journey with a vibrant procession, celebrating the legacy of Japan’s medical pioneer. With a farm-to-table restaurant, EV charging, and free Wi-Fi, it’s a destination where tradition meets modern convenience.

Insider Tips
Visit during the annual Shōshū Festival to witness a historic wedding procession, and explore the nearby Shunrinken for a peaceful retreat.
- Best Arrival Time: Visit between 9:00 AM and 9:30 AM on weekdays to secure a seat at the Sen-sai Bakin (Seasonal Bistro) before the lunch rush begins, as the lunch menu sells out by 12:30 PM.
- Hidden Gems: At the Shunrinken (Spring Forest House) exhibit, ask the staff to show you the original 19th-century medical instruments and handwritten surgical notes from Dr. Hanaoka Seishū—these are only displayed during special guided tours held on the first and third Saturdays of each month.
- Weekend Special: On Sundays, arrive by 10:00 AM to participate in the free Harvest & Herb Experience workshop, where you can pick seasonal herbs from the on-site herb garden and use them to make a small batch of Shiitake and Mint Infused Oil to take home.
- Must-Try Product: Purchase the Purple Cloud Ointment (known as Shiun Kō) at the main shop before 1:00 PM on weekdays—it’s only restocked once daily at 10:00 AM and often sells out by midday.
- Parking Tip: If you're arriving on a weekend or during the Seishū Matsuri festival, park in the far left section of the lot (near the e-bike rental stand), as the central parking area fills quickly and the designated large vehicle spots are reserved for visitors with disabilities.
- EV Charging Alert: The EV fast charger is available from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM only. If you're using it, ensure your vehicle is fully plugged in by 8:55 AM to avoid being blocked by incoming vehicles during peak hours.
- Cultural Experience: To access the Shunrinken (Spring Forest House) historical site, enter through the eastern gate—it’s only open during the first two hours of the roadside station’s operating hours (9:00–11:00 AM) and is not accessible after 11:00 AM unless you’re attending a scheduled tour.
Best Time to Visit
